Description
Ortho tricyclen (birth-control pills) are used to prevent pregnancy. Estrogen and progestin are two female sex hormones. Combinations of estrogen and progestin work by preventing the release of eggs f
rom the ovaries (ovulation) and changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Ortho tricyclen are a very effective method of birth control, but they do not prevent the spread of AIDS and o
ther sexually transmitted diseases.

Side Effects
Smoking cigarettes during the use of Ortho tricyclen has been found to greatly increase the chances of these serious side effects occurring. To reduce the risk of serious side effects, do not smoke ci
garettes while you are taking Ortho tricyclen. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from oral contraceptive use. The risk increases with age and with heavy smoki
ng (15 or more cigarettes per day) and is quite marked in women over 35 years of age.

What special precautions should I follow?
Liver disease (or history of, including jaundice during pregnancy or oral contraceptive use) or
- Mental depression (or history of)¡XOrtho tricyclen may make these conditions worse or, rarely, ca
se them to occur again. Ortho tricyclen may still be a good choice but you may need to be tested more often
- Diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes)¡XUse of Ortho tricyclen may cause an increase, usu
lly only a small increase, in your blood sugar and usually does not affect the amount of diabetes medicine that you take.
- Epilepsy (seizures) (or history of) or
- Heart or circulation prob
lems or
- High blood pressure (hypertension) or

How should you take this medication?
If you miss doses of your oral contraceptive, you may be at risk for becoming pregnant. Instructions about missed doses are different for different products. Carefully read the instructions in the man
ufacturer's information for the patient. If you have any questions, call your doctor or pharmacist. If you miss pills, you may need to use a backup method of birth control for 7 days or until the end
of the cycle.

Attention
If you miss one menstrual period and have taken your tablets as directed, continue taking them. However, if you miss one period and have not taken your tablets as directed or if you miss two menstrual
periods and have taken the tablets as directed, call your doctor and use another method of birth control until you have a pregnancy test.

Before Using This Medicine
Pregnancy¡XOrtho tricyclen are not recommended for use during pregnancy and should be discontinued if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant. When Ortho tricyclen were accidently taken early in
pregnancy, problems in the fetus did not occur. Women who are not breast-feeding may begin to take Ortho tricyclen two weeks after having a baby.
Breast-feeding¡XOrtho tricyclen pass into the
breast milk and can change the content or lower the amount of breast milk. Also, they may shorten a woman's ability to breast-feed by about 1 month, especially when the mother is only partially breast
-feeding.
